Large Wimbledon Common garden
Lots of self-sown shrubs and small trees were removed from this garden to create a lighter, more open space. A generous long border disguises the bare trunks of the existing privacy conifers and a large lawn provides space for the grandchildren to play. The new, larger terrace is perfect for outdoor dining and entertaining. An elegant garden room has its own private garden.
Clipped standard olive trees in dark planters flank the orangery's glazed doors, giving the main terrace a calm, formal note, while a wrought-iron table and chairs make the most of the space for family meals outside. Tucked to one side, a small bistro table offers a quieter coffee spot, framed by shasta daisies, roses and hydrangea.
The long border is the main feature of the garden: geraniums, hydrangea and drifts of erigeron soften the base of the conifer screen through summer, while spring brings a display of near-black and blush-pink tulips with alliums following. At the garden's far end, the Crane Garden Building sits quietly among the trees, its own small terrace and planting giving it the feel of a separate, private retreat within the wider garden.
