Wimbledon Entertaining Garden

These hospitable clients in Wimbledon love to entertain, and wanted a garden that could flex to suit parties, small gatherings, and even theatre rehearsals - a “green room” if you like. A generous amount of storage was also needed for a nascent business. The fences and a new shed were painted black, allowing them to disappear into the background — a trick that also makes the planting stand out all the more vividly against it.

The clients' two treasured Lutyens benches were incorporated into the design, adding a sense of history and familiarity to the new layout. The brief called for a mostly green garden, enlivened with pops of bright colour: purple Allium Purple Sensation, orange Geum Totally Tangerine, red Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff and jewel-toned Penstemon Raven punctuate the planting, while a wide circular lawn provides the flexible open space needed for entertaining, both large and small.
